Sergeant Philip Dale Nix was not wearing his uniform when he saw a crime unfolding at a gas station. He was off duty, away from the formal authority of badge 873, yet he intervened. His death left the Greensboro Police Department without a supervisor, a colleague, and a public servant who had given 23 years to the city. It also left a permanent absence for the people who knew him beyond the badge—an absence no memorial can make smaller.
