The loss of Parole Agent Joshua Lemont Byrd is measured not only in the violence that took his life, but in the empty place it leaves with his wife, three children, colleagues, and everyone who depended on his work. At 40, Byrd was still giving his time and judgment to a difficult public responsibility—one that demanded patience, vigilance, and the willingness to meet people at consequential moments in their lives.
